360 degree post-drive panorama from ~30 R-NavCam images. Roughly assembled using MS-ICE

This panorama was assembled from 29 post-drive NavCam images taken by Curiosity using its right-side Navigation camera on sol 4889

Assembled from 15 overlapping left-side mast camera images using MS-ICE. Note the nicely weathered rock in the center of the image. I’ll share the close-up MAHLI mosaic of that in a separate post

The drive was just under 15 meters taking 25 minutes. Full details are below. the NavCam mosaic shows the new terrain in front of the rover the rover is looking South-southeast. More images will hopefully arrive soon, I’ll put those in a new post.

Well this was not on my Bingo Card for today.

See the dust cascading off the suspended rock in this animated GIF. This strongly suggest they ran a voice coil to vibrate the drill bit for 15 minutes to tray and free the stuck bit.

Did the drill bit get stuck in the rock when they tried to pull it out of the freshly drilled hole on sol 4877 (April 26, 2026)?

This self-portrait of NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity combines dozens of exposures taken by the rover’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) during the 177th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity’s work on Mars (Feb. 3, 2013), plus three exposures taken during Sol 270 (May 10, 2013) to update the appearance of part of the ground beside the rover. The updated area, which is in the lower left quadrant of the image, shows gray-powder and two holes where Curiosity used its drill on the rock target “John Klein.”

NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity acquired this image of a pitted vertical rock face dubbed “Timboy Chaco,” using its Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI), located on the turret at the end of the rover’s robotic arm.
