One of the first examples of Rhode Island having conflict with Britain was over the Sugar Act of 1764. This act allowed for tighter trade regulations and increased duty on molasses. Rhode Island became increasingly frustrated with Britain over perceived unfair taxation on the colony’s trade economy.
